Greater Côa Valley, Portugal

The Greater Côa Valley was having trouble with high numbers of abandonment and forest fires due to large amounts of dense brush paired with long hot summers. In an effort to combat this, they brought back semiwild grazing animals to create firebreaks. In doing this they also effectively brought back many other native species and helped restore the once-prosperous food chain.

Swedish Laplands,
Sweden

The rivers running through the Swedish Laplands were historically used for transporting logs and due to this many areas were damned and bolders were removed from the river bottoms. Rewilding Sweden is now working to remove those damns and return the boulders to the rivers to increase the salmon and sea trout numbers. Sweden has also implemented a catch and release policy on many of the rivers to help boost the fish population.

Affric Highlands,
Scotland

The Affric Highlands was previously heavily deforested and drained of wetlands to be transformed into open plains for farming and residential use. Today, in an effort to reverse the human destruction of the land native trees are being planted to create lush forests, wetlands are getting restored, and grazing herbivores are being brought in.

Danube Delta,
Ukraine, Romania, Moldova

The people living in the Danube Delta are not well off economically and strongly depend on the lands natural resources, therefore new developments risk their way of life. Rewilding Europe is supporting the communities of the Danube Delta by supporting the development of nature based businesses, which intern creates incentives for the population to restore habitats and accept a return of wildlife.
