Lawns traditionally were located around castles in Britain and France but instead of grass, they contained chamomile or thyme. The grasses we see today in lawns came from Scottland along with sports that require grass, such as golf and lawn bowling. Lawns were exclusively owned by the rich as upkeep was expensive and required many hands to scythe and weed.

Industrialization brought about the mass production of lawnmowers making lawns cheaper and easier to maintain for common people. The popularity and idealization of lawns was a result of landscaping architecture in places such as Central Park and new affordable subdivisions pre-equipt with grass lawns in the era of conformity in the '50s.
